Unleashing the Power of Neuroleadership: Wired for Motivation

This year, Wendy Jenkins OAM, Founder of Ready Resilience, will continue to focus her insightful TEMI monthly articles on ‘Neuroleadership’, offering science-based actionable tips you can apply right away.

Motivation has long been a holy grail of leadership – how do we inspire people to bring their best, consistently and authentically? Neuroleadership brings a science backed lens to this challenge, helping leaders move beyond guesswork and into the wiring of the human brain.

One foundational principle of neuroscience is that the brain constantly scans for signs of reward or threat. When leaders create uncertainty, apply excessive pressure, or cause people to feel excluded, they can unintentionally (or sometimes intentionally) trigger a threat response. This activates the amygdala, diverting cognitive resources away from creativity, collaboration, and motivation.

On the flip side, environments that signal psychological safety and meaning activate the brain’s dopaminergic system which is home to motivation, learning, and reward. Dopamine, sometimes called the brain’s “motivation molecule,” is released when we experience progress, autonomy, mastery, or a sense of purpose.

This is where intrinsic motivation plays a crucial role. Unlike extrinsic motivators like bonuses or praise, intrinsic motivation stems from within, driven by curiosity, alignment with personal values, or the joy of solving meaningful problems.

Neuroscience shows that when people feel internally motivated, the prefrontal cortex stays engaged, enhancing focus, persistence, and goal-directed behaviour. When neuroleaders support autonomy, offer challenge without threat, and connect work to a deeper “why,” they activate the default mode network, where personal meaning and self-reflection reside.

The takeaway? Motivation isn’t manufactured through pressure or perks, it’s nurtured through safety, autonomy, and meaningful work. Neuroleadership empowers leaders to align their behaviours with how the brain naturally sustains motivation over time.

So ask yourself: Does your workplace and leadership inspire the kind of motivation that comes from within, or is it relying too heavily on pressure and performance metrics?
