Q&A with the 2024 Global Mobility Champion of the Year

Applications for the 2025 Quest TEMi Australasian Workforce Management Awards are now open at www.temiawards.com.au.

We recently sat down with 2024 Global Mobility Champion of the Year Award Winner, Danae Bentley of Newmont Corporation, to ask what advice she would offer anyone considering applying for this year’s awards program.

Here’s what she had to say.

Q: Tell us a little about why you entered?

Danae: I entered the Global Mobility Champion of the Year Award because, as a woman in this industry, I realised that self-promotion does not make you conceited, it just means you are proud. Over my 18 years in global mobility, I’ve worked across three countries, traveled to dozens of others for work, and met countless professionals along the way. I’ve learned invaluable lessons and built meaningful relationships throughout my career.

However, in a field where roles can be quite specialised and where senior leadership often doesn’t fully understand the nuances of our work, it can be easy to overlook our own accomplishments. Sometimes, we forget to take a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come. It’s easy to become so focused on the next challenge or goal that we don’t celebrate what we’ve already achieved.

For me, this award was an opportunity to pause, look back, and say: “I am proud of what I’ve done.” I’ve worked hard, and I believe it’s important for all of us, and women especially, to recognise and own our achievements. In many cases, we are the ones who need to be our own cheerleaders, advocating for the value we bring to the table. There’s nothing wrong with being proud of the journey we’ve taken, and I hope by sharing my story, I can encourage others to celebrate their successes, too.

Q: How did it feel to win?

Danae: Winning the Global Mobility Champion of the Year Award was truly overwhelming, especially because I was nominated alongside peers that I know and deeply respect. To be recognized in the same category as such accomplished professionals was an honor in itself, and I honestly didn’t expect to win. The entire moment felt like a blur – there was this mix of excitement, disbelief, and gratitude all at once.

Receiving the award in front of my colleagues and peers made it all the more meaningful. It was a special moment, not just for me, but for everyone who has supported me along the way. It’s one thing to receive recognition for your work, but it’s another to have it celebrated by people you admire and who have played a part in your journey. It’s a moment I will always cherish.

Q: What would you say to young professionals who are inspired by your success, to encourage them to innovate and strive for more within their own careers?

Danae: To young professionals who are inspired by my journey, I’d say this: The global mobility industry can be incredibly challenging at times. You are constantly navigating the intersection of people’s personal and professional lives, and it’s not always easy to balance those aspects. However, this is exactly what makes the work so rewarding.

There are few other industries where you have the privilege of witnessing life-changing moments – whether it’s helping someone relocate to a new country, facilitating a fresh start for a family, or guiding a business through a global expansion. The impact we have on people’s lives and careers is profound, and that’s what makes the challenges worth it.

My advice is to stay curious, stay committed, and never underestimate the value of the work you’re doing. Even when it feels difficult or like you’re facing obstacles, remember that you’re shaping the world for others in a meaningful way. Keep pushing boundaries, innovate where you can, and always strive for excellence. The rewards, both personally and professionally, are well worth the effort.
